I don’t know about all y’all, but I always struggled with mother’s day, mother’s birthday, and christmas. I never connected with her as a person. As a kid I didn’t really know what kinds of things she liked, because I never saw her have fun. I don’t really have memories of ever doing anything fun with her. Just around her, while she watched.
Yeah, I’m sorry your mother was depressed. Mine had hobbies, I could buy her a gift card to Michael’s or JoAnn Fabrics. Or I could make her a food, she liked that.
Similar experience, though I think my mom was just white-knuckling her way through being a single mom with two kids, so she didn’t have a lot left over to pursue her passions and share that with us. That, and her father was a monster, so my grandmother was doing her own white-knuckle process a generation prior. I’m trying to make myself more emotionally available to my kid, because I’d like to reduce the generational trauma, but it’s going to make for an interesting conversation someday.
