I wonder if this has something to do with the EU mandating most consumer electronics to have replaceable batteries from next year onwards.

“Hot-swappable” is above and beyond replaceable. To me hot-swappable sounds like you’ll be able to swap the battery pack without turning off the device, which seems like it would require the device to have another power source to cover the changeover.

Eh, rumors are the battery life will be low for the Frame. So, this addresses that.

Sounds like a worthwhile tradeoff for something you’re strapping to your face and therefore want to be as light as possible.

Weight distribution is more important - many put a battery pack on the back headrest to offset the weight of the main body. Makes it a lot more comfortable for longer sessions or fast movement.

Considering the Steam Deck has an easily replaceable battery this might just be an increased design complexity for hot swapping = more cost, so they made it “enthusiast” tier to have separate pricing.

It’s a great feature either way though, I’d use it for sure.

I guess its highly likely that the kit can be purchased later down the line? Thats kind of cool (like if I can purchase it once it comes out but get the kit as a birthday present…)

Do you really think a website that was created to cover the steam deck, shouldn’t also cover steam machine/controller/frame? It’s already pretty niche, and I think most people interested in the Deck will also be interested in other steam hardware.

Steam have an impressive reputation of not trying to just bend their customers over and screw them over raw. Them remembering not only lube, but to wine and dine us first also helps.

You still get screwed (for your money) but it’s a far more pleasant experience.
