Eight Democratic candidates faced off in back-to-back debates Thursday night in Maine, amid a sprint to replace Platner on the general election ballot.
If it were a race, and the first place person was disqualified, then the second place person would get first. Is there some obvious reason I’m not seeing for Maine to not just put the second place person as the nominee?
This is presumably another advantage of ranked choice because with FPTP imagine a situation where the first place winner’s voters would all have rather had the third place than second place.
Third place would have been first if first didn’t exist, not second. Maybe even the second place voters would rather have had third than first for that matter.
In ranked choice you can already see these preferences.
Then there’s the angle where you simply don’t want to encourage a situation where second place is motivated to immediately try and sabotage the winner. There’s a reason one of the first changes to the Constitution was ending the practice of second place in the election becoming VP.

That’s not how political races work.
