This is mostly a nothing burger. MOST of the data intensive stuff is already backed up if you have it on. According to the email I got this will increase my usage by .1GB (100mb). I’m honestly surprised they were not counting all settings already. I’m, overall not happy with them in general these days but this is a pretty minor change.

Your current storage status: Your estimated increase in Android device backup will be 0.1 GB after this change.

Hey guys, as a service I’ve been backing up everything you say, feeding an AI and filling my hard drive with all the garbage the AI says in your name within my system… which is a lot!

Anyway, you’re running out of space. Pay me or I’ll have to delete things.

Enshittification! We said free storage, now you have to pay for it. Why? Because fuck you, that’s why. Also, we need money to support fascism.

Nice! Switched to GrapheneOS a few months ago and apparently the backup tool also backups apks alongside data. So I think its literally 10 times cooler than Google’s solution. But never restored it so far.

Graphene’s own built in backup is what I’m using, I have it set to backup to my NextCloud everyday. That being said, I have not tried to restore from it yet, so if you use it, be better than me and actually test the restore process.
