Because they wouldnt have to print manuals, boxes, discs, manufacture packin items like statues and whatever, wouldnt have to assemble them together, store them in warehouses, ship them to retailers, etc etc… that they would be able to make games cheaper than ever, and developers would make more money doing it!
This was the lie they used to get us started on digital downloads to begin with. Something I called bullshit on since day one.
When have you ever heard of a company going, well…gamers are used to paying 50 dollars for games, but now we’ve shed all this excess cost, we can now lower the price to 30 dollars for them!

All digital downloads have been, since the very fucking beginning, is a way to reduce costs for THEM, while increasing profits for THEM, while the customer gets the finger.
and now they cry that people don’t buy new games at retail prices, when we don’t even own them, double especially now that they are trying to charge 70, 80, 90, 100 dollars for fucking games, and whine and woe about gamers doing such major damage to the poor developers and publishers by waiting for sales to buy game we dont even own for 5 dollars.
the pushback against digital downloads has been a long time in the making, and i hope to god it succeeds and runs like lightning through PC and console gaming so we start getting physical games again. Physical games that arent just a code in a box. Physical games that are actually on the disc, that don’t require an online service to to be installed or to run.
Agreed, except on the profit part. I’d say it’s more about control, like if 1984 was in some digital platform and suddenly it got removed from everyone’s libraries (…oh, wait). Then with control, profit is much easier, if that’s still desired.
