The issue is that disks only load half-baked, rushed product that has a million bugs with the anticipation of 100 patches over the next 18 months.

Maybe, and hear me out, ship complete games that aren’t the result of a grueling 6/12-month crunch.

Hard truth that most people aren’t willing to come to terms with.

I like physical media, I really do. I still own probably 200 PS3 discs and about that much between PS2 and 4, but I’ve not bought a physical game in probably a full decade. It makes no sense with the current market and my last ~8 years of gane purchases have been entirely on Steam, obviously digital. The only things worth playing are a handful of genuinely great indie games and those would’ve never got a physical release anyway.

*Tl;dr: if you’re actually mad about this, come to PC and you’ll realize you don’t care that much about digital games, you just care because Sony is taking away the last thing that reminds you of the good ol’ days when they were good.

The issue is we rightfully trust Valve to always provide what we paid for. We don’t expect Sony to care that you bought and paid for something and provide the game 5 years from now.

It’s very cool that I still have my ps2 games from high school on disk that work fine. If I bought them from Valve, I’d still have them too. Right now PS3 games can still be downloaded from the store on a PS3, but I doubt that will be the case in a few more years.

We only gave you this one option and you chose it so therefore it’s your fault.

I mean… He’s an ex valve employee. They literally created the digital download market for pc games. I think the last physical pc game I bought was Diablo 2. The only store I can think of that still sells physical pc games is Walmart and those are all like c tier games from 10 years ago.

I see where console players are coming from but pc has been basically digital only games for well over a decade if not 2.

because most new games today require downloads in some form anyway. You can’t play a disk without an internet connection the way you could in the past; so it’s without purpose. The disks are license tokens now.

Fuck, the last time I bought a game for the PS, it didn’t even have a proper disk. It had a game key for the PS store.

there were other ways in which that shift was manufactured, too, like early access through downloads; and the fucked up shit of delivering crappy buggy games that they then fix over the next month.

Answering just the headline, because rage bait might be the worse type of clickbait and it makes me not want to open the article:

It’s something that’s being pushed for some 20 years now, always a bit at a time, always homeopatic dosis so people don’t notice. DLCs, updates, multiplayer on third party servers only… I doubt someone from Games Radar is watching this thread, but if someone is, using the community as scapegoat to fool the community itself doesn’t end well, if that’s the intent.

don’t forget the whole digital download bullshit started with big promises of games being cheaper, too.

Because they wouldnt have to print manuals, boxes, discs, manufacture packin items like statues and whatever, wouldnt have to assemble them together, store them in warehouses, ship them to retailers, etc etc… that they would be able to make games cheaper than ever, and developers would make more money doing it!

This was the lie they used to get us started on digital downloads to begin with. Something I called bullshit on since day one.

When have you ever heard of a company going, well…gamers are used to paying 50 dollars for games, but now we’ve shed all this excess cost, we can now lower the price to 30 dollars for them!

      never.

All digital downloads have been, since the very fucking beginning, is a way to reduce costs for THEM, while increasing profits for THEM, while the customer gets the finger.

and now they cry that people don’t buy new games at retail prices, when we don’t even own them, double especially now that they are trying to charge 70, 80, 90, 100 dollars for fucking games, and whine and woe about gamers doing such major damage to the poor developers and publishers by waiting for sales to buy game we dont even own for 5 dollars.

the pushback against digital downloads has been a long time in the making, and i hope to god it succeeds and runs like lightning through PC and console gaming so we start getting physical games again. Physical games that arent just a code in a box. Physical games that are actually on the disc, that don’t require an online service to to be installed or to run.

Agreed, except on the profit part. I’d say it’s more about control, like if 1984 was in some digital platform and suddenly it got removed from everyone’s libraries (…oh, wait). Then with control, profit is much easier, if that’s still desired.

Chet, gtfo with this individualising bullhsit. You’ve read too much supply-demand theory that’s lead you astray. Next to no one has an issue with digital (download) media. We’ve been downloading CDs digitally since 1998. We have a problem with digital downloads thay fucking stop working when some boardroom decides to.

Exactly!!! I have been saying for ages now!

Look at Gamestop. The only reason it hasn’t gone under is due to the stock incident. Even Gamestop sees the writing on the wall and ventured out to retro gaming to stay afloat.

If the downloaded copy requires phoning home to authenticate and play, storing it on a backup drive won’t help in the long run.

Console players will always be fucked by this sort of thing until they modify their hardware or move to PC. Sony’s just making the circumstances more blatantly obvious.
