    I have an established system with my office peers/subordinates. If I knock on your door/pod wall and you give me a thumbs down. I won’t bother you but they also know to follow up with me when they are done with whatever they were working on. It’s a good system of mutual respect.

    Got a guy at work who gets frustrated when he has to repeat himself because someone was listening to something. Well guess what - even if I wasn’t listening to something I’d be so far in my own head you’d have to repeat yourself anyway.

    This happened to me, but it was “have you heard of our lord and savior” rather than just a hi, so I was very pissed.

    EDIT: Assuming it’s two people who know each other already. Why would a stranger go up to you, to ask how’s it going, when they don’t know you at all?
