A software update rolling out to Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerators in the US is putting ads on the fridges for the first time. The “promotions and curated advertisements” are coming despite Samsung insisting to The Verge in April that it had “no plans” to do so.

Maybe it did not have plans to put ads on every last home appliance, but when the interviewer gave them the idea, they started making all of the plans forehead tap

I feel for those who got duped on their fridge. I couldn’t find an entry for this incident, yet, on https://consumerrights.wiki/Samsung so I’ll sit down and try my best to write it up.

If I want my fridge enshittified I’ll bag up my own poop and put it in the freezer, thankyouverymuch

Didn’t George Carlin have a bit about how all marketing people should just kill themselves?

My in-laws have had an utterly terrible experience with Samsung kitchen appliances.

Not because of tech, mind you, but because they’re shitty and break down. Don’t buy Samsung.

Yeah we were just in the market a year or so ago and I thought this was cool for about a second before I realized what this would be used for. It’s just advertising straight into your kitchen, as you are grabbing food. It’s the perfect place for them to advertise. Any lack of advertisements was always going to be temporary.

Plus honestly what is the actual use for it? Just put a tablet on the counter if you want a screen in there

Here’s how we fix a society that’s already drowning in advertising … more advertising.

Russell Howcroft would think that this was the Duck’s Nuts!

I swear sometimes that at this point all we produce as a country is ads. People in marketing mock their customers (source: was in marketing to make better wages than journalism for less than a year) and think they’re doing the lord’s work because of their salaries.

Shocked that they haven’t already had ads.

Has anyone used a smart fridge? I’m struggling to think of what features I’d actually end up using.

Had to go fridge shopping recently, and looked at them in the stores. The only feature I’ve seen that is semi-useful is seeing what is inside without opening the door. 100% not worth the cost or ads. Plus the more complicated the extras, the more things that can go wrong. Wound up with a fridge that doesn’t even have an in door water dispenser and it is great
