Reached the final level of Star Fox, but got stuck at a fight with Star Wolf. Dunno how many times I have tried, just can’t kill them all, before all my companions are gone, and my ship explodes. May abandon the campaign and “git gud” by playing from start.

Finally reached a big town in Monster Hunter Stories. Not sure if it’s the first such city or the only such city though. I like the feeling of when your characters enter the first big town after leaving their village in JRPGs.

I have also unlocked “Channeling”, it allows you to let a monstie “inhert” trait or moves of another monstie. The monstie you inherit from is gone forever though. I haven’t experimented much with it, but it can allow you to power up your monsties. No proper fusing unlocked yet.

Also faced some boss monsters, who don’t follow the usual of two attacks of one type and then switching to another. Their pattern is also repeatable, but it also means you have to guess it the first few attacks, which means it ends up all being luck. Not a fan of this. Though the combat isn’t much difficult so haven’t had too much of a problem because of it.

It is making me want to play proper Monster Hunter though. I may end up starting MH: Rise or MH: Wilds after finishing this.

On PS side, spent most of my time playing Earth Defense Force 5. Just got the “5% main campaign done” trophy, when I am about halfway through the game. The way game counts missions is that each mission has 20 “check boxes” for 5 difficulty levels with 4 different classes. Since I am playing on normal (2nd difficulty, 3 are unlocked from start, and I guess you unlock last 2 after finishing the game) with just one class, I only get 2 check marks out of 20. So, only after crossing mission 50 or so did I get that trophy. I don’t really care about trophies, but it’s kinda annoying when you finish the game only have a 5% completion trophy, better to get no trophy in that case :grinning:

Going to pause Fallout 4 for a while, started Red Dead Redemption 2 instead. The start of the game, specially the first chapter, is really slow. With the way the game is hyped I was kinda disappointed.

My main issue is with “realism” in the game. All actions have long animations, even looting requires so much time, the character will bend down and check the downed enemy and then stand back up. Or when looting a room, you will have to press the button to open cabinet, which your character will do, then press another button to “Take” and most of the time your character is covering the view so you don’t even know what you are taking, and when you get “you already have maximum amount of this item”, you have no idea what item it is talking about.

The first chapter is more of a tutorial, so hopefully things will speed up after that, but feels a bit annoying right now.

What about all of you? What have you been playing and/or plan to play?

My partner was out of town, so I just finished 13 Sentinels this week.

In typical Vanillaware fashion, they ran out of budget and cut a lot of things. I’ve read something about up to 50%. At the very least, the game should have been 15 Sentinels. Despite that, the story is a wild ride and has a satisfying conclusion. Honestly, I’ve enjoyed it even more that Danganronpa previously. Some open questions remain and a few plot points seemingly get dropped, but in the end, I just like the entire cast and loved the structure. There’s always a mystery, a twist or a new perspective and in the end everything kinda just clicks together.

There’s one gaping hole in my understanding I couldn’t find an answer to, maybe someone who’ve played game could answer this:

    Heavy spoiler

Assuming all 2188 logs are true, which is implied but theoretically unprovable, why did they give the 15 clones nanomachines?

They made a point of evacuating from earth and even let people die out in space to prevent an infection with them. After all, they caused the extinction of humanity (even if this is never actually explained further).

I get that they intended to preserve human culture that way, but it just seems like a ridicules risk to ship the very downfall of mankind with every probe trying to restart it.

The RTS part of the game was also surprisingly engaging, although mostly on the easy side. But that’s to be expected, as I did almost all the story segments first and could fully upgrade a lot of stuff before even starting it properly. There is even an endgame with an absurd amount of stages to dig your teeth in, but I’ll probably only delve a little bit into them before starting the next game.

It’s been a bit of back catalogue work for me. Finally managed to sit through the campaign of Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime with 3 others, now with that out of the way I’ve started Tunic for the first time.

… And of course, there’s always time for Helldivers 2.

I played Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime with my kid, though we dropped it somewhere in middle when he got addicted to Fortnite.

He was mentioning it recently so may start it again.

    Star Fox

I’m two medals away from having them all on both difficulty levels. That’s my quest this weekend, to finish the fight.

That fight against Star Wolf is incredibly tough. I think I used 4 or so continues before I was able to take them down, and I feel like my winning run came down to pure luck. They really magnet to your rear and hate spending more than 2 seconds in front of you.

I went into it with one partner down, so I always had two of them on me at any given time. My only strategy was to use an evasive maneuver every few seconds to keep the fire off of my rear while I tried going after the two enemies that would follow my remaining two partners, since they were easier to shoot.

The disappointing aspect, though, is that my allies basically flew around in circles doing nothing once they were free from their assailants, while I still had to work on eliminating the other two basically on my own.

What sorta worked for me was just going in circles around the central structure. Every once in a while, one of them would fly in front of me and I could try to get a couple quick shots in. Still took 10 minutes of that before I managed to eventually get them both.

Yeah, the allies are pretty useless in this fight. They do help keep enemies away from you though.

I am not really sure what strategy worked but I successfully beat them twice. First time I beat them but died twice at Andross. Continued and had to fight then again, won the fight without dying, then killed Andross without dying.

Working my way through FFVII Rebirth still, but made a special trip out to buy Rhythm Heaven Groove. It’s incredible to me that this series has been going for twenty years.

I’ve also got a lot of board games and a D&D session under my belt for this week. It’s been a busy time! I played Tapestry, Love Letter, Kingdomino, Carcassonne, and 7 Wonders.

I love Rhythm Heaven Groove, but it has come out at a frustrating time. Summer vacation is so relaxation filled already that playing doesn’t feel like a break to me. I think my goal will be a little play every week so it can be a “blow off steam” with a new song and level as I need it during the school year.

Kingdomino is a simple concept. You are building your kingdom one domino at a time. Instead of numbers, each domino half has a terrain on it. Some have crowns. Each terrain group is worth the number of crowns times the number of terrain tiles. If you have any board game cafes near you, it’s a great way to spend 20 minutes with a smile.

Last week I said I missed couch multiplayer of Mario Kart. Well, I had the chance to play Mario Kart World with 2 other people that weekend. It’s so much fun! It’s a whole different experience and I wish I could do it more often. We also played some Marvel: Cosmic Invasion, something less competitive to make up for all the shells and other items in Mario Kart.

I keep playing Star Fox, already done all the routes I think. I’ve definitely been to all the stages. I also played some more challenges and battle. I think I might try to do all the challenges and get all the badges. @[email protected] do a barrel roll! I use the somersault and U-turns a lot in battles with Star Wolf. Like James McCloud once said “Never give up, trust your instincts”.

I started River City Saga: Journey to the West. I played the first two River City Saga: Three Kingdoms (Next is still on my backlog to finish) and this one goes rogue-like. It doesn’t lean as much on the roguelike part, at least I found it less annoying than other games in the genre. It’s still silly beat 'em up fun.

Finally I’m playing Denshattack! for a review, still under embargo so will just say try the demo for Nintendo Switch 2!

        Nice! 🎉

There are different objectives in some stages, some of them you’ll realize are for branching. You might already know this but just in Corneria, there are two routes. If you go through all the archways on the water when Falco says something like “Those make a good obstacle course”, he’ll guide you through the waterfall on the right. Otherwise you keep going straight.

About Star Fox, are all planets different stages? If yes. I have lots of stages I have yet to visit.

Going to wait for your Denshattack review. Too many games going on to demo another 😁

I’m done with World 5 in Yoshi Reads Mystery Books. One world left, maybe I’ll finish it this week to get started on Star Fox.

In Fallout 3, I’ve been heading north for side quests. Lots of Deathclaws this way, which is supposed to be dangerous, I guess. They feel kinda underwhelming, too weak. Super Mutants, Ghouls and even Scorpions have some endgame variant that have a ton of health and make me pull out the heavy damage but the Deathclaw just has its basic form. It doesn’t feel right!

No new glitches to report for Visions of Mana this week. I’m just starting to overlevel a bit thanks to the Cactus bonus that has been doubling my exp gains for weeks now. I don’t think they’ve thought that one all the way through!

I am also officially done with Monster Hunter Wilds now. Going from grinding a very fun boss monster in Zoh Shiah to grinding this ‘new generation’ of boss monster with Omega and Gogmazios killed my motivation. At this point, I’m not even interested in the Ascendance expansion next year. They teased a return of Lao Shan Lung, but how can I trust it not be be ruined by some DPS check or whatever else they come up with? I just don’t enjoy Capcom’s idea of boss battles anymore.

Expansions usually fix issues with the main game, but I think mine are too fundamental. They split skills into weapon and armor skills to account for the ability to carry two weapons at once, but this also means that almost all interesting skills have to be crammed into the three slots you get. Add to that the set bonuses armor gets and creating your own mixed set suddenly becomes very restrictive. This is not what I’ve been grinding every armor set for!

And then there’s the seasons. The environment can look very pretty, but 90% of the time it just doesn’t. Even in the pre-made quests with fixed environments Capcom usually decides to set the season to Fallow and it’s just such a weird decision.

I’d rather play a certain other Monster Hunter game that I’ve been meaning to play for years… but not before taking a long overdue break.

    Finished Stray!

“Play as a cat doing cat things” is a genre I’d like to see more, both this and Little Kitty, Big City were very fun to play.

I also enjoyed the worldbuilding, it managed to create a memorable world despite the short 5h-ish playtime, yet was very disappointed with the main collectables - I loved the idea of them being memories of the old world, but most are just one image and a short dialogue about it that don’t add much to the lore.

But overall I was satisfied with what I got here.

    Finished Xenoblade Chronicles: Future Connected!

The announcement of the new game got me in the mood for some Xenoblade, and I remembered I had never played the expansion that came with the XC1 DE.

It’s a nice Melia-focused story where she got to showcase some of the character development she got over the main game. One thing that’s really awkward is how you have 4 playable characters and only 3 party slots, feels like they should’ve expanded the party so you could use everyone, or maybe turn the new characters into a “dual character” similar to the Yumsmith hero in XC3.

I think it’s the weakest of the 3 “expansions” available for the main games, but still rather good. Wouldn’t recommend buying the DE just for it, but if you already have it it’s a nice extra.

Playing Ariana and the Elder Codex!

I found this channel on Youtube with a guy that has tastes really similar to my own, and he gave this game a lot of praise. Since I was in the mood for more 2D platform games I decided to take a chance and try it.

Compile Heart/Idea Factory are quite inconsistent in quality, you get some gems like Mary Skelter 1/2 mixed with a lot of crappy games, but at least the early impressions of this one are good. Artwork is gorgeous, gameplay is good (though not as polished as the top-tier 2D plataformers) and it runs fairly well even on the Switch 1.

Finised the first “book”, which I assume was the tutorial area.

    Playing Fate/Stay Night!

Slow progress on this game but I moved past in the prologue into Shiro’s story. And I already miss the Rin/Archer banter.

Finished up through Remix 8. Beatspell is rad, I wasn’t expecting it to be an actual roguelike.

    Ado guest appearance?!?!?!?!

I 5*'d Beatspell’s true roguelike mode on the second try, and lamented that it wasn’t harder. Then I looked at the unlocked message, which I expected to be more lore but turned out to be a button code that enables hard mode. And hoo boy, hard mode has HANDS.

I’ve been playing Grounded, which was one of the games included with my ps+ subscription. The game is “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” the game, and is surprisingly fun considering how obviously targeted at children it is. Orb weavers and Wolf Spiders are very scary when you are a 1 cm tall child. The crafting tree is very fun, and it also has a surprisingly good underwater experience.

I love this aesthetics of “miniature” people, or playing as Toys, and I blame it all on Honey I Shrunk the Kids, and Toy Story.

How is Grounded when playing solo? Thinking about starting it soon.
