What has been particularly telling for me as an Aussie is the sheer number of radio ads I’ve heard in the past few months trying to get people to travel to the US, or offering competitions where the prize is a US holiday (which, if I was the type to actually phone and enter radio station competitions, would be a deterrant for me!). It’s clear that US tourism has taken a nose-dive and plenty of us non-Americans don’t want to visit any more (it’s a bit disappointing as there are a few things I would like to have seen, but wouldn’t risk going there now).

I have been wondering what it be like to be in an El Salvadoran concentration camp looks like. Maybe I can meet new friends.

Funny how many “Going to Canada/USA is easy” type of ads I have seen. No, I don’t see why I need to go to Canada either. Travel is a huge pain in the ass even without interment camps.

Well, their treatment of natives is pretty horrendous still, but that’s no different than Australia and NZ.

Yes. Are you seriously trying to downplay the mistreatment of natives in any of these places?

I’m unfamiliar with Australia and NZ, but fully agree that historically Canada has engaged in a massive genocide. But in the context of the thread about American interment camps I think it’s a bit disingenuous. While far from perfect, Canada has done a lot in the truth and reconciliation department.

Most of the mistreatment these days stems from resource development projects infringing on unceded territories.

I live in an indigenous community, and have lived in many others throughout my life. I have noticed a massive improvement in my elder millennial life.

While I think some systemic racism still exists towards indigenous folks, I can’t think of anywhere I’ve been with more racial awareness. I certainly noticed much more racist behavior while traveling in Europe recently.

Agreed, I didn’t mean to imply that but my wording could have been better.

Fair enough, I’m just defensive about the vestigial parts of civil society that are still non-fascist. While I agree that the whole planet has deeply flawed things going on, I think this far right stuff that is currently happening is something new. And I disagree with the whole “both sides” kinda narrative.

I have to put up with the shitty KIIS (106.5) repetitive trash at work all day. Hearing Gordie hammer on about going to LA just drives me nuts.

Headphones and cranking my jams/podcast to eleven.

Maybe also, occasionally accidentally unplug/knock over whatever is broadcasting that trash.

Ouch! I am glad I generally get to choose when the radio is on or not (most of the time it’s when I have to run an errand and so have it on in the car and can pick which channel to listen to).

Here’s an idea: enter those competitions, win the prize, and then request to turn it into cash. It is win-win: ICE loses potential bounties, and Australians get money.
