Canadians are not yankees. Yankees are from the southeast. The entire east coast of the US is far further south than most people realize.
I was trying to comprehend why a citizen of Montana would designate ‘a northerner’ a Yankee.

It’s anyone from the north when you’re talking to fellow US citizens and all US citizens when you’re talking to someone from outside the country as far as I’m concerned
