Aren’t they the same substance used in the white part of the peel below the delicious zest? Though I might be thinking about clementines and the white stringy bits that run from top to bottom along the centre. Been a while since I had a proper orange but don’t they have even more of that white stuff?
I think the membrane that surrounds the little juice packets is also bitter, if you separate it from the good parts.

Ah lol. What about the peel? The zest is delicious but the white part is awful. You normally gotta be careful if you’re using a shredder or microplane when zesting because if you go too deep it tastes pretty bitter. Though the texture is also not very appealing, though I do wonder how much of that is from the flavour.
Oh, wow, I had no idea. I don’t use zest too often, but I’ll have to keep that in mind next time! I could probably end up making something that I think tastes amazing while being completely off-putting to others if I’m not careful 😅

Oranges and other citrus fruit are also significantly acidic, which is hard on teef. So try not to go overboard, or at least rinse your mouth with water afterwards if you eat citrus regularly.
By the same token, do not rinse your mouth with water after brushing your teeth. This gives more of the toothpaste’s fluoride a chance to adhere, from my understanding.
Can I eat the juicy orang right after brushing my teefers?
Maybe save a step, and simply brush your teef with the orange!
It is an exposure thing, so you’re better off eating it in one sitting rather than snacking on acidic things throughout the day.

The study is more correlation than causality. Even though they tried to be careful they did not (and can’t) account for a plethora of confounding factors, which – especially with depression – is particularly problematic.
They provide a plausible explanation for a causal pathway, but did not prove it. This provides a testable hypothesis, which is why I would read this more like “more research needed”, rather than definitive proof. I wouldn’t go as far as to say “eat an orange a day, to keep depression away”. Although it probably wouldn’t hurt to eat some more fruit, given how bad the fruit content in most people’s diet is anyway.
So this is, unfortunately, a rather sensationalist takeaway you’ve provided here, OP. But that’s the curse of how we’re doing capitalism. Even ‘top research universities’ like Harvard need to be sensationalist to attract some publicity and get their research funded.

I used to take pieces of orange peel, bend them so the inside turns convex and inhale it through my nose, it helped me stay awake in class.
I do a similar thing but i bend the orange peel inside a short glass to spritz the oils, then occasionally lift the glass to my nose and enjoy.
Oh i forgot i also add ~80ml of whiskey, a squirt of simple syrup and 3 dashes of bitters first.
Oh yeah emotions are just nutritional signals and gut-bacteria signals, I guess we’re all just making up reasons to be ABNORMAL AND DIFFICULT.

At least for me, all citrus fruits including their juices have an effect that they make me somewhat happier and help somewhat against depression. In the winter, I usually eat several mandarins a day.

True, but here (Denmark) it is literally illegal to sell anything but pure fruit juice as juice, if it is made from concentrate it has to be labelled clearly, and it is only allowed to ad the amount of water that was removed.
If it has added sugar it is called Nektar.
If it has artificial flavors it is called Saft. Saft can also have added sugar. Saft also means Juice, English does not AFAIK have the words to distinguish between pure juice and flavored and sweetened juice.
IDK the rules in other EU countries, but my guess is that they are similar, but localized depending on language.
I think the closest word would be syrup.
